As you know, every once in a while I like to remind and clarify; especially when I'm made aware of confusion in and amongst the parishes.  Please know, I am writing this with direct clarity so that all of us can better understand who does what and why.  Please read this with the charity and clarity I intend.

First, I want to remind everyone that our family of parishes has one priest assigned to it and I am that priest.  As the Pastor there are roles, duties, and concerns that are mine - not out of a desire for control or pridefulness, but because of my assignment from the Archbishop and what is listed in Canon Law. Fr. Zach is a "priest in residence," not an Associate assigned to our parishes.  His assignment is: Rural Vocations Director and Chaplain to Wildcat Catholic with residence in Wayne.  This means he helps with masses and other sacraments when he is available. If he is asked to lead a college student's retreat or go on a seminary visit, those are his first priorities.  Because of this, the parish does not pay Fr. Zach's salary, the Archdiocese does. We provide him a place to live and groceries as a means of compensation for helping us when he is here. We love and appreciate Fr. Zach.  Retired priests who live in the area can be invited to events and functions but if they are doing sacraments, then I need to be the one who invites them. Fr. Jerry lives within the family of parishes but he is a retired priest.  He doesn't want to do any weddings or funerals.  He will attend them, but he does not wish to be the celebrant.  

What does this mean practically?  All sacraments (Baptisms, Weddings, Confirmations and so forth), all sacramentals (Funerals, Quinceneras, and so forth), and all Canonical issues (annulments) go through or get approved by me - not because I say so, but because that is my role and duty as Pastor (again this comes from Canon Law).  When Fr. Zach does a baptism, wedding, or funeral; it is because I asked him to or said: "yes" to a request from a parishioner.
